NHL Betting: Sharks Ready to Take Bite of Big Apple

October 31, 2011

After struggling to start the season, the San Jose Sharks are on a roll and paying off nicely on the NHL betting lines at the Bodog Sportsbook. Can the Sharks keep it going on Monday night when they take the ice at Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers?

The Sharks hit the ice in the Big Apple coming off five straight wins – all on the road – over the Devils, Bruins, Predators, Red Wings, and Islanders to improve their record to 6-3-0 on the season.

Against the Islanders in their most recent outing on Saturday the Sharks grabbed a 3-2 win thanks to an overtime power-play goal from defenseman Brent Burns. Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture potted markers for San Jose in regulation time in that contest, and Thomas Greiss stopped 35 of 37 Islanders shots.

Greiss has received a little extra playing time to start the year thanks to an injury to starter Antti Niemi, and he’s responded with a 2-2-0 mark, a 2.26 goals-against average, and a .917 save percentage. Niemi, though, is back to full health and his numbers are just as good: 4-1-0 with a 2.18 GAA and a .917 save percentage.

The Rangers get that level of goaltending as well from Henrik Lundqvist, who has a 2.35 GAA and a .930 save percentage on the season. Lundqvist, though, was saddled with a loss by the Senators in his last action on Saturday afternoon, allowing four goals on 40 shots and giving up the winning marker to Milan Michalek in the shootout.

Brad Richards and Marian Gaborik combined for three goals and six points in that loss for the Rangers, who are still looking for their secondary scoring to emerge; Ryan Callahan, Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov, and Derek Stepan have just 11 combined points in the team’s first nine games.

The Rangers topped the Sharks 3-2 when those teams last met last March, with San Jose having been the -160 home favorite on the NHL betting lines for that contest. Overall the Sharks are just 3-6-1 in their last 10 meetings with the Rangers over the past decade.
