The intensity is ramping up on the 11th season of American Idol and if anything, the fact that Jessica Sanchez needed to be saved last week showed that you have to bring your best in this competition all the time or else you’ll be given your walking papers. One of the favorites learned that the hard way on Thursday night.

The theme of American Idol this week was “Now and Then”, which means the contestants were singing a modern hit along with an older classic and the bottom three were Colton Dixon (Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” and Earth, Wind And Fire’s “September”), Hollie Cavanagh (Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep” and Dusty Springfield’s “Son of a Preacher Man”) and Elise Testone (Alicia Keys’ “No One” and Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On”). Dixon was the surprise of the bunch as he had never been in the bottom three, while Testone had been there the last three weeks and Cavanagh was in danger in two of the last three weeks. Somehow, they managed to stay on while Dixon, who was one of the favorites to win the competition along with Sanchez and Phil Philips, was eliminated to bring the number of contestants down to six.
Sanchez and Phillips are now the favorites to go all the way on this edition of American Idol, while Cavanagh and Testone are still in it, as well as Josh Ledet and Skylar Laine. Phillips is the only one that has never been in the bottom three but he has received some criticism as well in the past. You just never know what is going to happen on American Idol, and you can bet that Dixon’s exit won’t be the last surprise on the hit television show.
